No Pushes for Puerto Ricans
Middle School Student, Framingham,MA
When I read the story on Jesus Colon, I started thinking aboout my dad. He tells me stories about how he grew up and how he dealt with prejudice, since he is Puerto Rican. There is one story that always amazes me. In my dad's high school, the big football kids would line up on both sides of a hallway. Everytime a kid walked in that hallway, the football players would push him across the hall, back across the hall, and keep repeating the same process until the kid ended up at the other end of the hallway. What was funny was, everytime my dad and his brother walked through the hallway with the football players lined up and ready to push, they did not touch my dad and his brother. Why? Because Puerto Ricans were notorious for carrying knives and guns with them. Even though my dad or his brother would not dare carry a deadly weapon, the football players already assumed that my dad had a deadly weapon.
